Dear Professor,
I am writing to let you know that I will not be coming to class today, I have had a fever for the past few days and am going to see a doctor this afternoon. Although I will not be in class I have checked the syllabus and finished the assignment that is due today, I have also asked a classmate to pick up any handouts that are given today. I just wanted to give you a heads up, and I hope to return to class by Monday.
